A rigorous study of geometric concepts utilizing Algebra I and Algebra II
Instructional Approaches:
Students, in a collabortive learning setting, will use technology to explore geometric concepts and learn to use these concepts in practical mathematic applications.
Pencils!!! All assignments that are not online need to be completed in pencil. All written assignments must be completed in pencil to be accepted by the teacher.

A calculator is not required for this class, but may be helpful when practicing for the end of course test. I will provide TI-83 calculators for in-class work when necessary.

Course Goals/Competencies:By the end of this course, students will be prepared to enter into Algebra II
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1.04 Operate with matrices to model and solve problems.
1.05 Model and solve problems using direct, inverse, combined and joint variation.
2.04 Create and use best-fit mathematical models of linear, exponential, and quadratic functions to solve problems involving sets of data. a. Interpret the constants, coefficients, and bases in the context of the data. b. Check the model for goodness-of-fit and use the model to draw conclusions or make predictions.
2.07 Use equations with radical expressions to model and solve problems; justify results. a. Solve using tables, graphs, and algebraic properties. b. Interpret the degree, constants, and coefficients in the context of the problem.
2.08 Use equations and inequalities with absolute value to model and solve problems; justify results. a. Solve using tables, graphs, and algebraic properties. b. Interpret the constants and coefficients in the context of the problem.
2.10 Use systems of two or more equations or inequalities to model and solve problems; justify results. Solve using tables, graphs, matrix operations, and algebraic properties.
Grading and Evaluation Methods: Participation and classwork will be graded based on the student’s performance in class. Homework assignments will be graded based on the work put forth in the homework assignment (SHOW YOUR WORK!!). Students are encouraged to correct any errors in homework assignments, as many of the quiz and test questions will come directly from the homework. Any special projects or presentations will be presented with a rubric to explain the grading process. Extra credit will NOT be offered in this class unless ALL course work is completed.
Projects (rubric), homework, classwork, presentations (rubric), quizzes, tests, and participation will all comprise 9 weeks averages. The Final exam will be an EOC and count as 25% of the final grade.
Grading Rubric: A 93-100 B 85-92 C 77-84 D 76-70 F 69 and below
Make-up Work: Students must request any missed work from the instructor. Students have five (5) days to makeup work missed that was assigned on a day the student was absent. If student misses an announced quiz, test, project or homework assignment, that quiz, test, project, or homework assignment is due the day the student returns.
Late work will not be accepted!
Academic Integrity:Craven Community College and Craven Early College is committed to academic excellence through honesty and integrity. To protect all students from the results of dishonest conduct, the College has adopted policies to address these issues. It is the responsibility of each student to become familiar with and understand all academic policies and the consequences for failure to adhere to these policies. Please read and follow all policies listed in the Campus Planner or in the Student Handbook Code of Conduct at: http://www.cravencc.edu/student/handbook/handbook.pdf
Attendance, Tardiness: *Please note the difference in this policy because this is a SEMESTER class. AttendanceProcedure: First-Tenth Absence-Student is expected to request make up work from their teachers and is responsible for making up that work within five school days. If absences are consecutive, more time may be allowed at the teacher’s discretion.
Parents will be notified after the third and fifth absence of possible denial of course credit. The administrative team along with parent and student will create a plan for attendance improvement.
Eleventh Absence -If a student misses more than ten days (10), course credit will be denied unless waived by SSMT (Student Services Management Team). Student may request an appeal for a waiver to the SSMT due to extenuating circumstances (i.e. illness, death in immediate family, etc.). Student must be able to document all days of absences in the appeal process (examples-court documents, doctors’ notes). Waiver decisions will be determined at the end of the school year.
Tardy Procedure:
First tardy-Teacher records tardy and warns student.
Second tardy-Teacher emails or calls parent that the second tardy has occurred and reminds parent of possible consequences.
Third tardy-Student will stay after school and will be assigned cleanup detail.
Continued tardiness will result in other consequences determined by the Dean.
Learning and Other Resources on Campus:Craven Community College offers the following resources to support student education goals: The Academic Skills Center provides a Tutorial Computer Lab, Writing Lab, and Math Lab. These labs are staffed by instructors and advanced students to offer assistance with any level of math or writing. Tutorial assistance for CCC students is provided through the Supplemental Instruction program and a nationally certified peer tutoring program. The ASC administers make-up tests per instructor guidelines, hosts a variety of workshops, and assists special needs students. The Goodwin Memorial Library provides a collection of resources selected to support the educational programs offered by the College. Internet access is available in the library to CCC students for educational purposes. For additional information on the ASC and the Goodwin Memorial Library, please visit: http://www.cravencc.edu/admissions/Course Catalog/General Information.pdf and at: http://www.cravencc.edu/student/handbook/handbook.pdf
Online Decorum:To promote an online learning environment that provides each student with the opportunity for academic excellence, students of Craven Community College are expected to become familiar with and adhere to the Code of Conduct. The complete code of conduct can be found at: http://www.cravencc.edu/student/handbook/handbook.pdf
Instructor-specific expectations:Student progress can be viewed by students and parents for up-to-date information on attendance and class averages on Engrade.
Students are reminded to be accountable for their own performance in class. Please be RESPECTFUL of everyone in and out of class. Most importantly, do not be afraid to ask for help – your teacher cannot read your mind!
